The Super-Sneaky Shopping List

*whoops. this was supposed to be published yesterday!*

Last week my husband kept sending my cryptic messages asking if we had this or that in the pantry.

“How are we on yeast, wheat flour, AP flour, and grape-seed flour,” he asked.

Like a good wife I scurried to the kitchen to get a status report on the goods he asked about. “You’re almost out of active-dry yeast, we need more wheat flour, the regular flour’s fine, and we don’t have grape-seed flour; I’ve never even heard of that. What the heck are you up to.”

He responded—a little too quickly, I must add—with, “Wouldn’t you like to know.”

Why yes, yes I would like to know.

Later that day we went shopping to “pick up a few things for the weekend.” “A few things” turned into a printed-out Super-Sneaky Shopping List.

What you can’t see from that list are the completely random items: grape-seed flour, beets, rhubarb, leeks, Brussels sprouts, BBQ sauce, and one sweet potato, among many other things. He was definitely on a mission.

The Super-Sneaky Shopping List turned into an exciting weekend of cooking, baking, lots of cleaning, and full stomachs. Here’s a list of the things we made this weekend, most of the baked goods are now sitting in our freezer for future consumption! (Recipes linked below, when applicable)

Breakfast tacos (recipe to come)
Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls (recipe to come)
Brisket and sausage
Honey-Whole Wheat Biscuits (from King Arthur Flour Whole Grain Baking)
Little Smookies
Hamburger and Hot Dog Buns (King Arthur online)
Chili for chili cheese dogs (recipe to come)

It was an intense and delicious weekend of overloading on (mostly whole wheat) homemade carbs. This morning for breakfast I really wanted another biscuit or tortilla, or let me be honest, some more pie or focaccia, but instead I went the healthy route and made myself a green purple “monster.”

About 2 cups of spinach, 1 cup blueberries, 1/2 cup strawberries, 1/2
banana, soy milk, flax seed, and 1/2 scoop protein powder. Delicious and almost zero carbs.

The past two days is just another example of why I love my husband. He took an ordinary weekend and packed it full of great memories and good food. Not to mention, watching him wear his apron and knead dough is incredibly sexy.

  1. Holy cow. I think I need to get in on this menu. That's AMAZING! I wish my husband would bake bread products at home… that sounds tasty and DEFINITELY sexy!

  2. YUM!! I'm going to have to remember this.. Ryan's already dreaming of all the real food he'll get to eat when he gets home! Love the purple monster too! I have to add fruit to mine so I'm always at at least 50 grams carbs but they're good carbs! : )
