12 Weeks: An Update

Thank you all for your kind words on my post last week! My husband and I are both very excited about what’s to come in the near future!

I have to be honest, though; I still don’t feel like blogging or writing. You may have noticed that content on here has dropped since…well…since I got pregnant. (A huge thank you to the guest bloggers I had recently!!) I’ve just had zero motivation to do anything these days. Writing and even thinking coherent thoughts have dwindled down to the bottom of my to-do list.

Yup…I peed on those sticks!

For the past eight weeks (I’m 12 weeks now), eating has been a chore; the only exercise I’m getting is racing to the bathroom to pee a million times a day (with an occasional walk around town with Bella); my stomach is completely confused about what’s going on and it’s not happy about it, and the only two things I actually enjoy doing lately are taking naps and sucking on peppermint candies. (That’s a lie—I’m in the middle of an Alias marathon. I loved this show when it aired and I love it all over again now. I just hope my husband doesn’t mind the names Sydney or Michael…)

I’m totally envious of the women out there who have been posting the cute weekly belly photos and surveys since the day that second pink line popped up on their stick. I’m hardly motivated to make a cheese quesadilla, let alone get creative. I need to also say that I am in complete and utter awe of those of you who have been pregnant and worked during your first trimester. Never in my life have I been more thankful that I’m not allowed to work out here, because I don’t know how I’d be able to function! I suppose I would just suck it up and do it, but know that I’m seriously impressed with you.

I actually felt fantastic the first two weeks after I found out I was pregnant and I did a few of those surveys you see everywhere, but then the nausea kicked in and decided become a permanent house guest. I haven’t (thankfully, luckily, knock on wood) actually been sick, but I’ve been very close and there have been more than a handful of days where I wish I could just effing throw up so I could feel better. (And yes, I’ve tried Zofran and ginger pills and this and that…nothing really works.) Honestly, this has felt like a eight-week hangover without the fun night from before (well, there was a fun night three months ago, but you know what I mean).

I don’t mean to complain, because I know what a blessing this is and how many women would give anything to be in this position, but I’m just explaining where I’ve been lately. This blog started as a way to document my life, so I realized I really need to start documenting this part of my life on here. 

I will say that several times a day I thank God I’m feeling sick, or after I curse because I brushed my arm on my boob and it stung like H-E-Double-Tooth-Picks, I’m thankful I have the pain. This “morning” sickness is a constant reminder that I am pregnant and I am making a baby. 

And! Before people start to get too concerned with this downer post, where I seem to do nothing all day but watch decade-old TV shows and take multiple long naps (which do happen every day, by the way), I make it a point—and my friends here make it a point—to get me out of the house. My calendar is still extremely full and I have some sort of luncheon or dinner out every day. It’s fantastic and just the distraction I need!

This post is getting much longer than I originally intended, but I wanted to share that so far this pregnancy hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows. Last night was the first night I’ve actually felt hungry in months. (Usually I feel nauseous and then have to force myself to eat.) It was amazing and I scarfed down all of my food like I wouldn’t feel hunger again. Low and behold, I woke up sick again today. 

Everyone says there’s a light at the end of the tunnel—I’m 12 weeks—and supposedly that light should start getting brighter any day now, so hopefully you’ll be seeing more of me soon, because I have a lot to talk about!


  1. Awww: I don't think I could handle the nausea! I mean, like- not at all! I hope it passes and you feel better! What better excuse to watch Alias and bum around the house? I'm not even pregnant and I do it (well, different shows and instant netflix movies!)! I hope you get to share some more on here because I am so super excited for you and can't wait to read about your journey! Hello: I have THE FEVER and the only prescription is downing my days away in baby stuff!

  2. Girl, it get's better. Then it gets worse again. And then supposedly better, and then I'm guessing worse. Basically, from here on out it's basically a crap shoot. I'm so happy for you guys and love that we get to be preggo at the same time! For at least a few more months until I pop this little girl out! Just wait till your planning the nursery and purchasing little tiny baby things and feeling him/her move around and punch you. That's the fun part! NO seriously, it's the most amazing feeling in the world! LOVE YOU!!!

  3. I know right where you are coming from. I fully intended (and still intend) to document the pregnancy on homewithmandy but I have zero motivation. I'm so happy for you! I hope your 2nd Tri brings some relief!

  4. Hang in there! It's all worth it. Enjoy watching endless amounts of TV while you can because soon those marathons will get interrupted by the sweet sweet sound of a baby crying 🙂 although, I'm on my second late 90's soap opera marathon of my own. 🙂

    So excited for you and I can't wait to follow along!

  5. I had the same problem during my first trimester! Nausea is the WORST…yet the best DEmotivator ever. 😉 I kept sprite and crackers by my bed and had a few sips and crackers before I ever got out of bed. It was the only thing that helped me not want to puke my guts up every morning. Hopefully you'll get some relief soon!

  6. Ah it's better after the first trimester! It was rough for me from weeks 6 to 12, and I worked too, and then after about week 13 I felt fairly normal. Some bad days, but I could still eat and do stuff.

  7. Oh, girl, I was right there with you. But I'm happy to report from week 14 that it went away overnight at 13 weeks. Other than needing to nap, which I do while my toddler naps (and I did over lunch breaks when I was working and pregnant with him!), I feel like a million bucks. I hope you get there soon!

  8. It'll get better! I'm due March 3rd and this first trimester has been hell. I thought it was bad with my first, but this one is worse. I'll be 12 wks on Monday and I'm slowly feeling better. I feel ya with the whole napping thing, sleep has not been my friend and having to go back to work during my first trimester has been trying. I'm so worn out by the end of the day that I don't get anything accomplished. Hope you start feeling better soon and can really start enjoying your pregnancy!

  9. This sounds exactly like how my first trimester went! I was nauseous but not actually throwing up, forcing myself to eat, lack of interest in blogging or taking pictures or doing anything aside from sitting on my bum. I really did just have a magical turnaround at 14 weeks. It was amazing; I never thought I would feel like my old self! I also was able to stave off vomiting throughout my entire pregnancy, labor, and delivery! I was wearing that as a badge of honor, but I ended up getting sick when my baby was 5 months old and hurling in the toilet with a screaming baby in the other room was probably way worse.

    I hope things start looking up soon!!

  10. I was super excited that the first trimester was over! I finally wasn't dragging myself through a work day. Try eating nuts (pistachios helped me), but I only got nauseous when I drove. I can't say that I completely understand what you're going through because I'm apparently breezing right through being pregnant, but congrats nonetheless and I hope you feel better!!
