On Turning 30: A Recap

Y’all, turning 30 turned out to not be that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. I didn’t sprout any gray hairs and as far as I can tell, I didn’t gain any new wrinkles, and I didn’t have a breakdown. I’d call that winning in my book. Speaking of books, I got a couple new books to read, as well as pretty earrings, a magazine subscription, gift cards, delicious tea, spices (fancy cinnamon and vanilla), my favorite Italian-style meat, and beautiful flowers. ‘Twas a good day.

My day with Julia was pretty low key, but since it was a special occasion, we both dressed up. Basically, I look for any excuse to have her wear tutus, and it was a nice reason to trade in the yoga pants and nursing tank.

I cheated on paleo all day and don’t regret it one bit. It started with breakfast. Since my birthday landed on a Friday, my husband had to work, but
before he left, he made me a delicious breakfast, complete with
French-pressed coffee, chile, salsa, milk in a wine glass, and hash
browns! Then, since we needed a reason to leave the house (we did dress up, after all), we took my husband lunch (Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich; my favorite from there).

Then then he surprised me with cupcakes when he got home!!

Pie and cupcakes are basically my favorite desserts ever, and it just so happened that they had a blueberry “pie” cupcake. He also got three more (but I was only interested in the red velvet and blueberry cupcakes), so he got two of them. Not wanting to spoil dinner, I ate half of each of them, closed the box, and put it on the end table for an after dinner treat.

Dinner, by the way, was sushi! Oh, it was so good. They have something called a “monkey brain” (bottom left picture) that’s a deep fried avocado stuffed with all sorts of stuff (crab, shrimp, and like five other ingredients). It’s creamy, crunchy, spicy, sweet, and my favorite thing on the menu. The other rolls were good, too, and their egg drop soup is some of the best I’ve ever had. Delicious!

On the drive home I was ridiculously excited to finish my cupcakes. Only there’s one problem, because when we get home, the box was GONE!!! Pure panic took over my body: WHERE ARE THE CUPCAKES??? And then our dog slowly walked around the corner. She. Ate. My. Birthday. Cupcakes!!!! We usually leave her outside, but since it was literally freezing out, we left her inside. She’s usually really, really good about not eating our food, so I didn’t even think twice about leaving them “out.” Well, Bella enjoyed my treats and then she spent her evening in the dog house.

I drowned my cupcake sorrows by soaking in a nice warm bath. My birthday was good, but it wasn’t over yet! Since I was born at 11:50 pm, I was able to finagle my way into celebrating on Saturday, too. Score!

I woke up on the 25th and my husband made us French toast. You guys, this is THE BEST French toast in the world. Yup, the world. He deviated from the recipe by adding a couple teaspoons of vanilla and cinnamon (always necessary), and it rocked my socks off. My stomach is growling right now just thinking about it, and I’m already looking forward to Mother’s Day so I can have it again 🙂

Lunch consisted of having my favorite Italian appetizer with my new meat. (I’m so thankful I found a butcher in town who sliced it up for me!) I savored every bite and for a moment I thought I was back in Italy.

We finished the day off by taking a trip to the cupcakery and bought another cupcake for both of us. Happy birthday to me 🙂

Until next year…here’s to making 30 a wonderful age!

    1. 🙂 Thank you! I craved sushi so much when we were in Italy, but now there's a place around the corner from me. It's just expensive, so we eat there on special occasions! Mmmmm and the cupcakes were delicious!

  1. Your birthday sounds AMAZING! All that food sounds very yummy.

Also, I feel like you should get a tutu to match Julia's. Y'all would be the coolest Mother/Daughter team ever!

    1. Haha a tutu to match would be hilarious! When she gets older I'd love to do the princess run at Walt Disney World, and then I'd totally sport a matching tutu 🙂

  2. Happy, happy birthday! So fun reading this post! I'm looking forward to turning 30 this year… if someone would just tell my 15 year old self that, how easier the teen years would have been, hahaha! Sounds like you had an absolutely fabulous day(s) celebrating! I laughed so hard about the dog eating your cupcakes! Gene always leaves his plates on the end table, and we always find Jonesie licking them. Poor pups- searching out "treats!" Enjoy your year, girl!

    1. Thanks! I know, I wish I could go back and give myself a talking to. It makes me hope that I'll share some insight with my daughter as she gets older!

  3. Happy Belated Birthday!! Sounds like you had a wonderful weekend of fun. Those cupcakes look delicious, glad you were able to get more to enjoy lol.

  4. Oh, those cupcakes look delicious, and I was so bummed when you said the dog ate them! I never was scared about turning 30 in a few months, and I hope mine is even half as yummy as yours was!

  5. This pregnant lady now needs sushi for dinner with a cupcake for dessert! 😉 I'm glad you had a great 30th birthday!!!!

  6. What a wonderful birthday! I'm especially envious of the cupcakes and sushi! I'm laughing about Bella eating the cupcakes, because I know exactly how you feel. Boomer once ate my entire take-home box of Mexican food. Talk about being mad/sad! Enjoy being 30! It's a wonderful age.
