Creativity, Coffee-Mate, and Target (+ Giveaway)

Y’all know I’m a huge fan of coffee and coffee creamer around here, but did you know that I drink—gasp—decaf? Ever since I got pregnant the first time, I just can’t tolerate caffeine in tea or coffee (and I don’t eat enough chocolate for it to affect me). It’s a sad fact that I’ve learned to deal with. A lot of people (mostly baristas) give me a horrified look when I express to them how exhausted I am, and then request a decaf coffee. The thing is, it’s what coffee symbolizes, and it’s the scent and taste association that wakes me up.

Besides loving coffee, I’m also—by nature—a morning person. That’s when I usually feel the most alert and the most creative. I love writing with in the morning with a fresh cup of coffee sitting next to me. Only problem is, my lovely daughter is also a morning person, so the laptop on my lap is usually replaced by a 22-pound, blond-haired little girl sipping her milk and eating her “nana” (banana).

I was bummed about missing out on my morning time (I may be a morning person, but I’m also a solo-parenting, pregnant, stay-at-home mom who has zero plans on waking up any earlier than I have to these days), so I started recreating my morning later in the day to spark my creativity. If I don’t need a nap myself, I make myself a half pot of coffee during her nap time, get out one of my favorite coffee cups (I have a plethora of favorites—see a sample below) and I get to work. Who says creativity has to be limited to the mornings? Not me!

*By the way, the cup that has coffee in it in the picture was designed with Sharpies! You’ve probably seen that idea floating around Pinterest before, and I’m here to tell you that it worked for me! And it’s had a ride in the dishwasher twice now and has survived to live another day.

Since I love adding a splash of creamer to my coffee, I’m especially excited about design star David Bromstad partnering with Coffee-mate and one of my favorite stores: Target. Bromstad designed limited edition bottles of French Vanilla and Hazelnut Coffee-mate flavors (coincidentally, two of my favorites) and are now exclusively sold at Target stores nationwide!

I’m not one to be stingy, so how about if I give one of you the chance to check out these fun, new designs plus some other fun stuff to help spark your creativity?!

Here’s what’s up for grabs:

The winner will receive an awesome coffee poster, five mini journals, a
pack of colorful pins, and two full-value Coffee-mate coupons (for all

  1. I love the smell of coffee, more than anything else really! And I own more coffee mugs than I know what to do with… it is a total weakness.

  2. I call myself a social coffee drinker. It's not something I get very often. On top of that, I don't tolerate caffeine well so I do decaf. But since I'm from the Seattle area, the smell of coffee is such a welcoming scent and makes me feel at home. Love it.

  3. We have hand crafted coffee mugs that have the place we visited on it engraved it on. I love French vanilla creamer! Coffee smells so good in our home!

  4. I totally don't really drink coffee, but Mark does! I usually make hot cocoa and then put a couple tablespoons of his coffee in it so it's way more chocolate-y than coffee-y. If that makes sense..

  5. I can't drink coffee without some delicious flavored creamer added. Vanilla is my favorite. I use a Contigo Mug and it keeps my coffee scalding hot – I can't tell you how many times I've burned my tongue on my coffee.

  6. Music sparks my creativity. I have to have my tunes when I'm writing fiction. Blog posts I can do with quiet, but the fiction has to have music. I haven't tried any creamers, but make my coffee with chocolate and coconut milk 😉 Mmmm coffee. Maybe I'll make more coffee after I finish my beer.

  7. I drank coffee for a year in college, occasionally when I lived in Asia and about 3-4 times a week since having a kid! Right now my favorite is to have sugar free chocolate creamer to it…so good!

  8. I LOVE coffee and always drink it with flavored creamer. My favorites are the Coffee Mate dulce de leche and the caramel macchiato flavors. I wish I was creative in the morning, but my best thoughts/creativity usually happens at night…curse being a night owl! 🙂

  9. I actually don't like creamer all that much… If I'm at home, I just use good old fashioned milk and sugar. 🙂 That's the way my mom always drank her coffee, so I guess that's how I started taking mine when I was in high school/college. And then Starbucks happened…. 😛 Currently, my favorite blend is Sbux's Veranda blend. YUM. And my favorite mug is the one my bestie got me for my birthday! It's just the right size, and of course, it reminds me of her. 🙂

I don't know how you do it without caffiene, though. I gave it up when I got pregnant with Charlotte, and didn't really want/need it for a while after that. Like you, it would make my heart race a bit. But then….I got pregnant with Millie and needed it to, like, FUNCTION. Haha! Pretty sure I've had at least one cup a day since my 3rd trimester with her. 😉 Second kids do a number on ya.

  10. I don't have a favorite coffee cup because I'm pretty sure all of ours are related to the Marine Corps! How does that happen?
